Pentecost: An Island in Vanuatu
by Genevieve Mescam

With black-and-white photography by Denis Coulombier, this book focuses on the traditional geometric designs and abstract motifs of Vanuata’s traditional ceremonial mats. Author Genevieve Mescamin reveals a country where subsistance agriculture still dominates along with a predominantly oral tradition (reflected in the lack of literature) and helps us to understand that not all language exists in written form. Vanuatu has a very uncertain future: in 2011 the UN recognised the destruction of one of its coastal villages as the very first instance of climate change refugees.
