French Guiana
Empire and Underworld
by Miranda Frances Spieler
This is detailed study of the time when French Guiana was used as a repository for slaves and criminals makes for uncomfortable reading. Whilst France was advocating liberty, equality and fraternity, French Guianese exiles were stripped of everything, including their names. As a result, there are no diaries, memoirs or novels of the inhabitants.
