by Melinda Nadj Abonji

This prize-winning story is told from the persective of a teenage girl, Idiko, brought up in a Serbian minority in Vojvodina. Her parents migrate to Switzerland in the early 1970s, and three years later obtain visas for Idiko and her sister. For all their efforts to adapt and assimilate, the family find themselves caught between the prejudices of their new homeland and the heartache of leaving behind friends and family as war rages in the Balkans.
