Birds Without a Nest
by Clorinda Matto De Turner

This groundbreaking book was the subject of fierce controversy when it was published in 1889. Its author Clorinda Matto De Turner was ex-communicated by the Catholic church, effigies of her were burned and she was forced to emigrate to Argentina. One of but a few books from Peru to be published in English, a 1904 edition was shockingly mistranslated and given a modified ending that in 1996 was restored by a new translation. Despite all this, the book was effective in its protests, particularly against the repression of the native peoples of Peru.
