Latvia is an ancient country, founded in 1201, but with a fairly recent history of independence. Even more recent is the extinction of the northern Latvian language of Livonian, last spoken in 2013. This collection of ancient and modern short stories has a preface written by the Latvian President, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.
