Katalin Street
by Magda Szabó

In 1949 Hungarian author Magda Szabó was awarded the Baumgarten Prize, but this was immediately withdrawn by the Stalinist authories. She was subsequently declared an enemy of the state and her books were banned until 1956. This novel, first published in 1969, is a haunting tale of three families at the time of the Nazi invasion. It is an absorbing ghost story, harrowing yet beautifully considered, portraying political events through the inner lives of her characters.
