Born in Nicaragua but raised in El Salvador after her father was exiled there, 2006 Neustadt Laureate Claribel Allegria is a major contributor to contemporary Central American literature. In her beautiful poetry about the human condition she shares observations on life under colonial rule: “The book spoke to you of justice and carefully omitted the injustice that has always surrounded us”.
