Tahmima Anam was born in Dhaka. This book, her first, won the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best First Book in 2008. It is a beautifully written story of the life of a young family, held together by their resourceful and protective mother, Rehana. It takes place during the civil war in East Pakistan in the 1970s, which would eventually lead to its emergence as independent Bangladesh.
