Arctic
A Woman in the Polar Night
by Christiane Ritter
“One could go mad with loneliness and terror but also mad with enthusiasm for the all too overwhelming beauty."
Born in Austria in 1897, Christiane Ritter was of the opinion that it ought to be compulsory for us all to spend a year in the Arctic, believing it would help us realise what is truly important in life. A rare example of a woman's account of life in a remote polar location, this book has never been out of print in Germany since it was first published in 1954. Christine died in 2000, at the age of 103.
